Technical Questions

Technology used

There are two different ways to access the NACR Database - using Lotus Notes, or a Web-Based version.

Lotus Notes

CCAD uses IBM Lotus Notes for its software infrastructure; a database management system with strong security features. The database can be used either ‘online’ or ‘offline’. When the database is installed onto a computer the user (i.e. the member of the CR department) will connect directly to the CCAD servers.

Operating system requirements

In order to be able to use Lotus, you will need the following system requirements:

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOTUS NOTES VERSION OF THE DATABASE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS VISTA OR WITH APPLE MAC.

Installing the software

How is the software installed and who should install it?

The national database software should be installed by an IM&T staff member, once authorisation has been obtained from the key stakeholders within your organisation. CCAD have developed an installation guide for the attention of IM&T staff: Volume 1: Installation Guide – the CD that is sent in the starter pack accompany these guidelines.

Will any firewall changes be necessary?

You will need to liaise with your IM&T department and ask them to configure the organisational firewall to the specification below. Once the firewall has been configured the data you either enter directly or import into the database will be securely submitted to the CCAD servers.

Web based version

Unlike the Lotus version there is no need to install software on your PC. You simply log on, with a secure password, just like home banking. There is nothing on your computer everything is stored at CCAD’s servers. To use this option all you need to do is to obtain signed permission from your Caldicott Guardian and then CCAD will issue a password so you can sign on from anywhere that has N3 access. This option eliminates the need for licences and as many users as you wish can be issued with a password. Information and Caldicott Guardian forms are available from the NACR Helpdesk (email: neo500@york.ac.uk; tel: 01904 321326). You will need to ensure that your IT/Server set up is compatible with the web version – please contact CCAD Helpdesk or York for further guidance.
